Paradox Interactive: Learning from Mistakes and Raising Player Expectations
Following the cancellation of Life By You and the troubled launch of Cities: Skylines 2, Paradox Interactive is addressing player concerns and outlining its revised approach to game development. The company acknowledges shifting player expectations and a reduced tolerance for buggy releases.
Paradox CEO Mattias Lilja and CCO Henrik Fahraeus discussed this evolving landscape with Rock Paper Shotgun. Lilja highlighted increased player expectations and a decreased willingness to accept post-launch bug fixes. The experience with Cities: Skylines 2's problematic launch served as a critical learning opportunity.
The company emphasizes a more rigorous approach to pre-release quality assurance, including expanded pre-launch player testing to gather crucial feedback. Fahraeus specifically cited the lack of extensive pre-release player testing as a contributing factor to Cities: Skylines 2's issues, stating a desire for "a larger degree of openness with players" in the future.
This new strategy is evident in the indefinite delay of Prison Architect 2. While Lilja confirmed positive gameplay, technical challenges necessitated the delay to ensure a high-quality release. He differentiated this situation from the Life By You cancellation, emphasizing that Prison Architect 2's delay stems from persistent technical hurdles, rather than fundamental design flaws.
Lilja acknowledges the competitive gaming market, where players are quicker to abandon flawed titles. This trend, he suggests, has intensified in recent years. The negative reception to Cities: Skylines 2, culminating in a joint apology and proposed "fan feedback summit," underscores the impact of these issues. The cancellation of Life By You highlights unforeseen development challenges, with Lilja admitting a lack of full understanding of certain problems. The company is clearly committed to learning from these experiences to deliver higher quality games in the future.
