Metal Gear Creator Hideo Kojima Questions How Long He Can Stay Creative as Death Stranding 2 Dev Endures Crunch

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 15,2025

Renowned game creator Hideo Kojima recently shared his reflections on creativity and the demanding nature of game development. In a series of X/Twitter posts, Kojima described the current period as "crunch time," the most physically and mentally demanding phase of production. He detailed the numerous tasks beyond game development itself, including voice recording, writing, interviews, and other non-game related work. While he didn't explicitly mention Death Stranding 2, its 2025 release date makes it the likely project undergoing this intensive phase. Kojima Productions' other projects, OD and Physint, are seemingly in earlier stages of development.

Kojima's contemplation of his creative longevity stems not solely from the current crunch, but also from reading a Ridley Scott biography. At 61, he questions how much longer he can maintain his creative output, citing Scott's continued success at 87 as inspiration. Despite the challenges, Kojima expresses his desire to continue creating for years to come.

Fans received an extended gameplay look at Death Stranding 2 in September, showcasing its characteristically bizarre style, including a unique photo mode, unusual characters, and the director George Miller's involvement. A story introduction was released in January, but much of the narrative remains shrouded in mystery. Kojima has, however, confirmed some character absences. The first Death Stranding received a 6/10 rating from IGN, praising its unique world but criticizing its gameplay.
