Ghost of Yotei Will Be Less Repetitive Than Tsushima

Sucker Punch Productions is set to address one of the main criticisms of the acclaimed 2020 action-adventure game, Ghost of Tsushima, with its sequel, Ghost of Yotei. In response to feedback about the repetitive nature of the original's open-world gameplay, the developer promises a more varied and engaging experience.

In a recent interview with the New York Times, Sony and Sucker Punch shared insights into Ghost of Yotei, the eagerly awaited sequel set to follow the journey of new protagonist Atsu. Creative director Jason Connell emphasized the team's focus on reducing the repetitive elements that plagued the first game. "One challenge with open-world games is the repetitive nature of tasks," Connell explained. "We're committed to balancing that by introducing unique experiences throughout the game."

Ghost of Yotei will also expand combat options, allowing players to master firearms alongside traditional melee weapons like the katana, adding depth to the gameplay.

Despite Ghost of Tsushima earning a solid 83/100 on Metacritic, it faced criticism for its gameplay. One review on the site labeled it a "competent but shallow and overfamiliar attempt to replicate the Assassin’s Creed style open-world adventure in the world of 13th-century samurai." Another suggested the game might have "benefited from a smaller scope or a more linear structure."

Fans echoed these sentiments, with some feeling that the game's beauty was overshadowed by its repetitive nature. One player noted, "Ghost of Tsushima is beautiful, but insanely repetitive and dull. The problem is that it all gets repetitive very quickly. There are only five enemy types: sword guy, sword and shield guy, spear guy, big guy, and archer."

Sucker Punch is determined to prevent Ghost of Yotei from facing similar critiques. The studio aims to retain the cinematic flair and stunning visuals that define the series, as creative director Nate Fox mentioned in the interview. "When we started working on the sequel, the first question we asked ourselves was ‘What is the DNA of a Ghost game?’ It is about transporting the player to the romance and beauty of feudal Japan."

Announced at the State of Play in September 2024, *Ghost of Yotei* is slated for release in 2025 on the PS5. According to Sucker Punch Sr Communications Manager Andrew Goldfarb in a PlayStation blog post, the game will offer players the "freedom to explore" the breathtaking landscapes of Mount Yotei at their "own pace."
