Resident Evil Horror Escalates in RE9

Elevating RE8's Most Frightening Sequence to "Another Level"

Resident Evil Requiem (RE9) is poised to take Resident Evil Village's (RE8) most infamous scare moment and amplify it. In a Gamescom 2025 interview with GamesRadar+, Director Koshi Nakanishi offered insights into the game's approach to horror and what sets it apart from past entries.

Prior to RE9, Nakanishi helmed one of the series' most chilling recent installments with RE7. Following that, RE8 delivered the universally terrifying House Beneviento segment. He revealed that RE9 will feature a comparable scene early on, but one designed to be even more frightening than its predecessors.

Nakanishi confirmed, "There are certainly similarities to that section. I believe each Resident Evil title has these self-contained sequences where you might be stripped of your usual arsenal. That's a powerful way to heighten the sense of terror."

The development team aimed to emphasize protagonist Grace Aschroft's lack of experience by thrusting her directly into a horrific situation at the game's outset. However, their goal was to intensify the horror further and deliver something novel to the fans.

Nakanishi elaborated, "But we also wanted to introduce fresh elements. Rather than simply recreating House Beneviento, we've added new dynamics like the self-defense mechanics in the demo, the creature's unique design, and the distinct feeling of being hunted by it. These aspects, I believe, bring the concept of a vulnerable, unarmed character in a claustrophobic space to another level."

Unlike seasoned series protagonists like Leon S. Kennedy or Ethan Winters, Grace's relative naivety becomes a key factor in amplifying the game's tension and fear.

Third-Person Mode Included as RE9 Could Prove Overwhelmingly Intense

During RE7's development, Nakanishi's team adopted a first-person viewpoint to maximize immersion and horror. For RE9, players will have the choice between first-person and third-person perspectives.

Nakanishi explained that the third-person option was added to provide a way to modulate the game's intensity. He stated, "Reflecting on Resident Evil 7's first-person perspective, I used it to create unparalleled immersion and fear—a goal most critics and players agree we achieved. However, it was arguably *too* frightening for some."

He expressed concern that the extreme horror might prevent some from completing, or even starting, the game. His desire was for a broader audience to experience RE9: "So, if you begin the game in first-person and find it overwhelming, switching to third-person allows you to step back slightly from that visceral horror. Having your character on-screen as an avatar can make the experience more manageable."

With fans eagerly awaiting the series' return and this latest chapter being promoted as one of the franchise's most terrifying, the community is excited to witness the new era of horror Capcom is crafting.
