Hideki Kamiya has once again expressed his deep desire to create sequels for both Okami and Viewtiful Joe during a recent interview with Ikumi Nakamura. Dive into the details to learn more about his aspirations and the collaborative spirit he shares with Unseen's founder, Nakamura.
Regarding Viewtiful Joe 3, Kamiya lightheartedly mentioned the game's smaller yet dedicated fanbase, noting its unfinished story. He shared that he provided feedback to the Capcom Survey advocating for a sequel, yet his suggestions were not included in the results. "The director himself is asking to make the game again but they won't even talk about it," he quipped humorously.
Kamiya's aspiration to craft a sequel for Okami is not new. In a November 2021 video interview with Cutscenes, he reflected on his departure from Capcom and the lingering elements of Okami. "When I was making Okami, I would have never thought that I would leave Capcom and work somewhere else. Okami had been built on various ideas, and I figured that regarding things that didn't make it in, since I would probably have a chance to work on it again, I could foreshadow and expand on some things, addressing them in a sequel and answering players' questions while hinting at how the story ends."
The release of Okami HD on multiple platforms expanded the player base, intensifying calls for resolution to the game's unresolved plot points. This only strengthened Kamiya's resolve to finish what he started. "There's always this part of me that thinks that I need to take care of this at some point. I want to do it someday," he reiterated with conviction.
The Unseen interview provided a glimpse into the collaborative dynamics between Nakamura and Kamiya. Their journey began with Okami and continued with Bayonetta, where Nakamura's contributions significantly shaped the game's design and world-building. Their partnership is defined by mutual respect and creative synergy, with Nakamura often encouraging Kamiya to broaden his vision and enhance the gameplay experience.
Nakamura recounted stories from their time on Bayonetta, illustrating how her concept art and ideas helped craft the game's unique style. Kamiya lauded her ability to grasp and elevate his vision, emphasizing the value of a team united by a common goal.
Despite departing from Platinum Games in September of the previous year, Kamiya remains dedicated to game development with no plans to retire. Nakamura highlighted the uniqueness of seeing Kamiya in an independent role, emphasizing his unwavering passion and commitment to creating impactful games. The interview concluded with both developers expressing their hopes for future projects and their ongoing desire to leave a lasting mark on the gaming industry.
The interview has sparked considerable excitement among fans, who are eagerly awaiting sequels to Okami and Viewtiful Joe. The realization of these projects hinges largely on Capcom's willingness to collaborate. As Nakamura and Kamiya continue to inspire and captivate their audience, the gaming community remains hopeful for official announcements and new chapters in these cherished franchises.
