Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Issues Update on Rare’s Long in Development Everwild

Rare's Everwild, announced during Microsoft's X019 presentation over five years ago, has been a topic of much speculation due to its repeated absence from Xbox showcases and rumors of reboots. However, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has confirmed that the project is still alive and progressing. In an interview with XboxEra, Spencer expressed his excitement for Everwild and mentioned a recent visit to Rare's UK studio, where he observed the development team's ongoing work on the game. This visit also included checking on Rare's live service pirate adventure, Sea of Thieves.

Spencer emphasized Microsoft's strategy of allowing development teams ample time to work on their projects, citing Everwild alongside other titles like State of Decay and the next game from Double Fine. This approach is supported by Microsoft's robust release schedule, enhanced by the acquisitions of Bethesda and Activision Blizzard. Spencer's upcoming visit to The Coalition in Vancouver, the developers behind Gears of War, further underscores Microsoft's commitment to its diverse portfolio of games.

Everwild has faced its challenges, including the departure of creative director Simon Woodroffe in 2020 and subsequent rumors of a reboot, which Microsoft has denied. The project is now under the guidance of veteran designer Gregg Mayles, known for his work on Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie, Viva Piñata, and Sea of Thieves.

While details on Everwild are scarce, it was initially described as a third-person adventure game with elements of a god game. The last trailer, released in July 2020, promised "a unique and unforgettable experience" in a "natural and magical world." Given the extended development time, the final product may differ from these early descriptions.

Microsoft's lineup of in-development titles is extensive, including the Perfect Dark reboot, the next Halo, and Playground's new Fable game. Additionally, Bethesda is working on The Elder Scrolls 6, and Activision is preparing this year's Call of Duty. In the near future, id Software's Doom: The Dark Ages is set to launch in May, showcasing Microsoft's commitment to delivering a wide range of gaming experiences.
