Speaking to Famitsu ahead of the PC launch for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed that work on the third title is advancing smoothly, with no delays, and its main scenario is fully complete.

When asked about the third game's progress, Hamaguchi responded that development is proceeding excellently, having commenced immediately after Rebirth's completion. He said, "We are progressing without any deviation from the schedule planned at the start of the Remake project, so we hope fans will anticipate its arrival."

Kitase previously noted before Rebirth's PlayStation 5 launch in February 2024 that the third game's main plot was already finished, though some polishing was still required. He has now provided an update, confirming the scenario is definitively complete and expressing his satisfaction with the result.

"I assigned the task of concluding the Remake project's story to Nomura (creative director Tetsuya Nomura), with the goal of honoring the original while delivering a fulfilling conclusion that the original didn't provide," Kitase explained. "This was finally completed at the end of the year, marking the completion of the third installment's scenario." He added his confidence that it will be a conclusion satisfying to fans.

Developers Initially Had Concerns Over Rebirth's Release

Released in early 2024, the trilogy's second chapter, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, received widespread critical acclaim and positive reception from players globally. Despite its success, the development team initially harbored worries about how the game would be received.

Kitase and Hamaguchi admitted to Famitsu their anxieties following the first game's success. "I was concerned about how it would resonate with players because it's both a remake and the second part of a trilogy," Kitase stated. "Ultimately, I was delighted by the overwhelmingly positive feedback that dispelled those worries." The abundance of favorable reviews boosted the team's morale and confidence for the final chapter. Hamaguchi added, "In that sense, I believe we've successfully set a positive tone for the third installment."

The game's praised narrative and engaging gameplay are credited in part to director Hamaguchi's "logic-based approach." As he explained in a separate interview with Automaton, while the team gathers feedback from staff and beta testers, a specific policy guides what gets implemented. He stated, "If our goal is A, and we receive an opinion like 'I want B instead,' that's merely a preference we can't necessarily act on. However, if the suggestion is, 'Wouldn't adding B make it even better?' then I will consider incorporating it where feasible."

PC Gaming Is Now the Standard

The developers also discussed the rising prominence of PC gaming, noting a significant shift in recent years as more players choose personal computers. The industry has adapted, with most major titles now launching simultaneously on PC, and console exclusives often receiving PC ports later to reach a broader audience.

Kitase shared his view that this is the current trend, and from a business perspective, rising development costs necessitate reaching the widest possible market. He pointed out that certain regions have limited console availability due to policies, whereas PCs are ubiquitous worldwide. "With PCs, there are no such borders, so releasing PC versions is an inevitable step to allow more people to play," he remarked.

Consequently, the Rebirth team prioritized a faster PC release for the second game. Hamaguchi stated, "The global flow of game users has shifted considerably. That's why we focused on shortening the release window for the PC version of FFVII Rebirth compared to the first Remake."

Drawing on all the experience gained from the first two titles, the grand finale of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy is undoubtedly a highly anticipated event. It may even arrive on PC more quickly than its predecessors, bringing the complete Remake Project experience to fans everywhere.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is now available on PC via Steam, in addition to its original PlayStation 5 platform. For those who haven't begun the journey with Cloud and his companions, the first part, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, is playable on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam.
