Stormgate's recent Steam Early Access launch has sparked considerable debate among fans and Kickstarter backers. This article explores the controversy surrounding its microtransactions and the game's current state.
The highly anticipated RTS game, aiming to evoke the spirit of Starcraft II, has faced criticism since its release. Despite a successful Kickstarter campaign raising over $2.3 million (against a $35 million initial goal), backers feel misled by the game's monetization strategy. Those who invested $60 in the "Ultimate" package expected complete early access content, a promise seemingly unfulfilled.
Many viewed Frost Giant Studios' project as a passion project and contributed to its success. While advertised as free-to-play with microtransactions, the aggressive monetization model has disappointed many. Individual campaign chapters (three missions) cost $10, and co-op characters cost the same – double the price of Starcraft II's equivalent. Backers who contributed significantly felt entitled to a complete early access experience, only to find a new character, Warz, available on day one but excluded from their Kickstarter rewards.
"You can take the developer out of Blizzard, but you can’t take Blizzard out of the developer," commented Steam user Aztraeuz, highlighting the irony of backers supporting the game only to encounter pre-launch microtransactions they didn't own.
In response to the negative feedback, Frost Giant Studios acknowledged the misunderstanding regarding Kickstarter bundle content. They pledged to provide the next paid Hero free to backers of the "Ultimate Founder’s Pack tier and above," excluding Warz due to prior purchases.
This concession, however, hasn't fully appeased the frustration over aggressive monetization and underlying gameplay issues.
Stormgate carries significant expectations, developed by Starcraft II veterans. While the core RTS gameplay shows potential, criticisms include aggressive monetization, visual inconsistencies, missing campaign features, underwhelming unit interactions, and an unchallenging AI.
These issues have resulted in a "Mixed" Steam rating, with some labeling it "Starcraft II at home." Despite these flaws, the game's potential for improvement remains.
