With the success of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, fans are eagerly anticipating which Bethesda game will be next in line for a remaster. Speculation is rife that Fallout 3 could be the next title to receive this treatment, especially after a leak in 2023 hinted at its possibility. Bruce Nesmith, a designer on the original Fallout 3, has shared insights on how Bethesda might enhance this beloved 2008 post-apocalyptic role-playing game.
Nesmith pointed out that the gun combat in Fallout 3 was "not good" and believes that a remaster would see significant improvements in this area. He referenced Fallout 4 as a benchmark, suggesting that the shooting mechanics in a Fallout 3 Remastered would align more closely with those in Fallout 4. "What did you see in Fallout 4? That will tell you what they felt was necessary to change from Fallout 3," Nesmith explained. He praised the efforts made on gun combat in Fallout 4, acknowledging the challenge of transitioning to a shooter-style game for the first time with Fallout 3.
The Oblivion Remastered, crafted by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, sets a high standard with its array of enhancements. It boasts 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, alongside significant updates to leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus. Additionally, it includes new dialogue, an improved third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology. These changes have been well-received, with some fans arguing that Oblivion Remastered is closer to a remake than a mere remaster. Bethesda has clarified its choice to go with a remaster rather than a full remake.
Nesmith suggested that Fallout 3 Remastered could follow a similar path of enhancement. He noted that the original game's combat "didn’t hold up to shooters at the time," but emphasized the advancements made in Fallout 4. He anticipates these improvements would be integrated into a remastered version of Fallout 3, enhancing its RPG shooter mechanics.
Reflecting on Oblivion Remastered, Nesmith remarked that it was not merely updated to the level of Skyrim from 2011, but rather to a standard that visually surpasses the most recent graphics updates in Skyrim. He went so far as to call it "Oblivion 2.0," underscoring the magnitude of the enhancements.
Bethesda is currently juggling multiple projects, including The Elder Scrolls VI, potential expansions for Starfield, ongoing work on Fallout 76, and the upcoming second season of the Fallout TV show set in New Vegas. With these exciting developments, fans have much to look forward to in the coming years.
