Possibility of Expansions or Sequels

The launch of Avowed has been a triumph, with both Microsoft and Obsidian expressing satisfaction with its sales performance. In an insightful interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025, Avowed's Game Director, Carrie Patel, shared her thoughts on the future of the game, including the possibility of expansions or a sequel.

While Obsidian has yet to officially announce any plans for the franchise, Patel is keen on continuing her directorial journey and is drawn to the idea of exploring new content. She expressed enthusiasm for potential expansions and a sequel, stating, "Now that we've built this wonderful world, and also built this team's strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I'd love to see us do more with it."

Changes in Avowed During Development

The development of Avowed was a journey filled with challenges and transformations. Patel described the process as "messy" but ultimately rewarding as the team found its direction.

The project, which began in 2018, faced hurdles as Obsidian considered selling the company despite previous successes with titles like Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity. The studio's independence brought its own set of challenges, but Microsoft's acquisition in 2020 brought new opportunities, leading to the official announcement of Avowed. However, the team had to abandon several planned features, including multiplayer aspects. A significant shift occurred in January 2021 when the leadership team was restructured, and the game was rebooted.

Under Patel's leadership, managing over 80 people in production was a formidable task. She noted, "Normally if you're stepping back and reevaluating your creative direction, putting together a new vertical slice and revised production plans, you would do that with a very small team." Patel's vision led the team to focus on enriching the story and lore from the Pillars of Eternity franchise and transitioning from an open world to open zones, enhancing these areas significantly.

Reflecting on the development experience, Patel remarked, "There's this interesting thing I've seen on every project I've worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."

Obsidian Wants Pillars of Eternity Tactics

With Avowed bringing renewed attention to the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Obsidian is now considering a tactical spin-off. During a Twitch Livestream on February 23, 2025, Josh Sawyer, director of Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, discussed the studio's interest in developing a tactics game for the franchise.

Sawyer stated, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like, a lot of people at the studio would like to work on; there are a lot of people who like tactics games." He highlighted the challenges in defining the project's scope, including team size, visual quality, and overall scale. While several developers have previously shown interest in creating a tactics game for Pillars of Eternity, the success of Avowed has reignited this ambition.

Despite this focus on a tactics game, Sawyer remains committed to his vision of developing Pillars of Eternity 3 with a substantial budget akin to that of Baldur's Gate 3, which stands at $100 million—a significant leap from the budget of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
