Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 VRR Limited to Handheld Mode

Back in early April, fans of the Nintendo Switch 2 were buzzing with excitement over the mention of variable refresh rate (VRR) on the system's informational pages. However, these references were quickly removed, leaving many to wonder about the feature's status. Now, Nintendo has provided clarity on how and where VRR functions on the Nintendo Switch 2.

In a statement to NintendoLife, Nintendo clarified that the initial information about VRR was incorrect. They stated, "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error." When questioned about potential VRR support in docked mode via a future firmware update, Nintendo responded with, "We have nothing to announce on this topic."

This means that, for now, users playing on their TVs with the Switch 2 will not have access to VRR, which is limited to handheld mode. The clarification comes after much confusion, as the original VRR mention was spotted and then quickly retracted. Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie documented the gradual disappearance of these references from various sites.

While this news might disappoint those hoping for VRR support in TV mode at launch, it's not necessarily the end of the road. Sony, for instance, introduced VRR support to PS5 consoles post-launch through a firmware update, suggesting a similar possibility for the Switch 2 in the future.

In other Nintendo Switch 2 developments, the company has announced a list of games that will receive free performance upgrades on the new console. Titles such as Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury are among those set to benefit. Additionally, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser has assured that the company will have sufficient Switch 2 units to meet demand "through the holidays."
