Assassin’s Creed Shadows debuted on March 20, 2025, and Ubisoft marked the occasion with a themed pop-up cafe. Game8 got an exclusive sneak peek, so here’s our take on the venue, cuisine, and displays.

Tucked Away in Tranquility

A Hidden Gem

The weather today was surprisingly mild, a stark contrast to the heavy snow just two days ago. Though not quite spring, the air hinted at warmer days, perfect for a stroll. Harajuku Station buzzed with its usual mix of tourists and trendsetters flocking to vibrant stalls. Yet, just beyond Takeshita Street’s clamor, a quiet corner offered respite.

In this serene nook, perfectly secluded, stood a cafe transformed to honor Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ launch.

Ubisoft teamed up with avid fan Dante Carver to craft this experience at the stylish dotcom space Tokyo. Game8 was invited to a pre-opening media event, and we’re grateful to Ubisoft for the opportunity. This write-up is independent, shared with readers and Ubisoft alike.

The Setting

The location feels discreet, but the entrance is unmistakable, with “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” glowing in vivid neon. The sign showcases protagonists Yasuke and Naoe, blended with the iconic Assassin’s Brotherhood crest.

dotcom space Tokyo was new to me, but its core aesthetic—sleek, minimalist, with white walls, exposed ceilings, and polished concrete floors (watch your step)—remained evident. Modern drink machines and chic beige furniture, including two long tables and cozy wall-side seating, create a space for about 40-50 guests.

The Assassin’s Creed vibe is subtle: posters of past games adorn the walls, scattered artwork, Ubisoft-branded pillows, and artbooks from earlier titles. A silent projector loops a Shadows-related show from Kyoto, while classic game soundtracks set the mood.

Exhibits at the back caught my eye, but first, let’s dive into the menu.

The Menu

Surprisingly Budget-Friendly

For a themed cafe, prices are refreshingly affordable. Drinks range from 650 to 750 yen ($4-$5 USD), and food is 800 yen ($5.30 USD). While pricier than vending machine options, the specialty drinks and branding make it a steal. Plus, orders come with a free goodie bag (while supplies last) and a bonus item, a treat for fans.

Drink options include:
 ⚫︎ Cafe Latte for the Light-Serving Assassin - 650円
 ⚫︎ Cafe Mocha for the Shadow-Working Assassin - 750円
 ⚫︎ Shadows Lemonade - 700円
 ⚫︎ Valhalla Lemonade (Norwegian-inspired) - 700円
 ⚫︎ Odyssey Lemonade (Greek-inspired) - 700円

Food choices are simple:
 ⚫︎ Assassin’s Creed Dolce Set - 800円
 ⚫︎ Assassin’s Creed Crest Toast - 800円

At the media event, we sampled both food items but picked one drink. Craving caffeine but loyal to the theme, I went with Shadows Lemonade. After a short wait, my tray arrived with a tote bag of goodies, and I snapped some photos before digging in.

The Cuisine

Toast Steals the Show

The irresistible aroma of melted cheese filled the air, growing stronger as my buttery, cheese-topped toast arrived, adorned with the Assassin’s Brotherhood logo in what seemed like paprika. A side of syrup invited a sweet-salty fusion, common in Japan and surprisingly delightful. My photo-taking delayed my first bite, leaving the toast lukewarm. The crust was firm, but the soft, toasted interior was divine, true to Japan’s legendary bread.

The Shadows Lemonade, likely soda with red coloring, hinted at cranberry’s tartness—though my taste buds couldn’t confirm. Drop a comment if you can tell!

Dolce Falls Short

The Dolce Set included a madeleine and a logoed cookie. The madeleine was moist with a subtle almond finish, but its density begged for coffee over my lemonade. The cookie, visually striking in teal, was tough. Its thick frosting and hard texture challenged my teeth, though a faint cocoa flavor peeked through. The madeleine outshone it.

The Displays

Art and Artifacts

After eating, I explored the exhibits. Replicas of Yasuke’s mask and Naoe’s Hidden Blade stood out, alongside mannequins in detailed protagonist costumes. I’d hoped for cosplayers, but the mannequins sufficed. Origami, figurines, and a bold painting of the protagonists added flair.

Many items, like the Hidden Blade and Yasuke’s helmet, are available via PureArts. For budget-conscious fans, the displays alone are a treat.

Worth the Visit?

Manage Your Expectations

Will the cafe draw crowds? The game’s reception is mixed, and the tucked-away location might limit foot traffic, but themed cafes attract both casual and hardcore fans. Note: it’s only open March 22-23, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 6:30 PM.

For Assassin’s Creed fans with realistic expectations, it’s a must-visit. Don’t expect an immersive adventure—you’ll be let down. It’s a cafe with themed food, drinks, and merchandise. The affordable prices, tasty cheese toast, free goodies (while available), and free-to-view exhibits make it worthwhile. Cosplayers would’ve elevated it, but that’s not the promise here.

If you’re in Harajuku this weekend, stop by for a quick visit. Non-fans might enjoy the toast and colorful drinks, but the experience shines for fans. For those not in Japan, I hope this recap brings the vibe to you.
