Scarlett Johansson Slams Oscars for Endgame Snub

Academy Award-nominated actress Scarlett Johansson, a two-time Oscar contender, remains perplexed that Avengers: Endgame, in which she portrayed Black Widow, received only a single nomination for visual effects.

In a recent Vanity Fair interview, Johansson expressed her disbelief regarding the 2019 Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster: "How did this film not get nominated for an Oscar? It was an ambitious project that seemed impossible to pull off, yet it succeeded as a cohesive film—and it ranks among the highest-grossing films in history."

While Avengers: Endgame is widely regarded as one of the MCU's standout achievements, the Academy has historically been hesitant to grant major honors—such as acting or directing awards—to superhero or genre films. To date, 2018's Black Panther remains the only Marvel production to earn a Best Picture nomination. Johansson's portrayal of Natasha Romanoff, from her debut in 2010's Iron Man to her poignant conclusion in Endgame, demonstrated award-caliber performance quality.

Despite her connection to the role, Johansson confirmed to Vanity Fair that a return to the Marvel universe is unlikely. She elaborated, "It would be challenging to determine a context in which returning would feel meaningful for me, or for the character I portrayed."

"I cherish the friendships and would love to maintain those connections indefinitely, but the character's narrative reached its natural conclusion. I respect that closure—for both the integrity of the story and for the fans who deserve that resolution."

Following Black Widow's Endgame sacrifice, Johansson revisited the character one final time in the 2021 prequel Black Widow, which she also executive produced.
