Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con: Now with Mouse Functionality - Discover the Features

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 24,2025

Ever since the Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled, fans have been buzzing about a specific detail from the trailer: the Joy-Cons. The speculation centered around their potential use as mouse controllers, similar to those on a PC, and their movements in the trailer. Now, we have official confirmation from Nintendo: the Joy-Cons can indeed operate in "mouse mode." This innovative feature allows players to slide the Joy-Cons across flat surfaces and use the analog sticks to simulate left-click and right-click actions, much like a standard mouse. Furthermore, players have the flexibility to use two Joy-Cons simultaneously in mouse mode, one in each hand, or pair one in standard mode with the other in mouse mode. The possibilities are truly endless, making the game truly your oyster.

During the Nintendo Direct stream, the capabilities of the Joy-Con in mouse mode were demonstrated through a sports game reminiscent of Rocket League, featuring robot characters using wheelchair-style vehicles. This game, titled "Drag and Drive," is a three-on-three basketball game where players must use two Joy-Con controllers in mouse mode to maneuver their characters around the court and attempt to score by sinking the ball into the basket.

The speculation about the Joy-Con's mouse functionality started with the reveal trailer, where the Joy-Cons were seen sliding in a manner similar to PC mice. In an attempt to gather more information, we reached out to Firaxis, the developers behind Civilization 7, and received a cryptic response. Features like the mouse mode and the new C button have fueled discussions about the console over the past month, especially as a counterargument to critiques suggesting that the Nintendo Switch 2 was playing it "safe" compared to Nintendo's typically adventurous approach.
