FFXIV Servers Encounter Significant Disruptions

Final Fantasy XIV North American Servers Suffer Major Outage, Likely Due to Power Failure

A significant server outage impacting all four North American data centers of Final Fantasy XIV occurred on January 5th, shortly after 8:00 PM Eastern Time. Initial reports and player accounts on social media suggest the disruption stemmed from a local power outage in the Sacramento area, possibly caused by a blown transformer. Service was restored within approximately an hour.

This latest incident contrasts with the persistent Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks that plagued the game throughout 2024. DDoS attacks, which flood servers with false information, caused high latency and disconnections. While Square Enix implemented mitigation strategies, these attacks proved difficult to completely prevent. Players often employed VPNs as a workaround.

However, evidence points to a different cause for this recent outage. Reddit users reported hearing a loud explosion or popping sound in Sacramento, consistent with a blown transformer, around the time of the server failure. The geographical limitation of the outage – Europe, Japan, and Oceanic data centers remained unaffected – further supports the power failure theory.

Square Enix acknowledged the issue on the Lodestone and confirmed an ongoing investigation. While the Aether, Crystal, and Primal Data Centers have since returned to service, the Dynamis Data Center, the newest addition, remained offline at the time of this writing.

The ongoing server challenges present a hurdle for Final Fantasy XIV, particularly given its ambitious plans for 2025, including the launch of a mobile version. The long-term consequences of these recurring server issues remain to be seen.
