Project Mugen Rebranded as Ananta, New Trailer Unveiled

Remember Project Mugen, the urban open-world RPG in development by Naked Rain and published by NetEase? First, the project has officially been renamed and is now known as Ananta.

This RPG was originally announced back in August 2023 at Gamescom. After a long period with no updates, a new trailer has finally been released. More information is expected on December 5th. In the meantime, watch the official Ananta trailer below.

Why the Name Change?

No official reason has been given for the name change. In Sanskrit, “Ananta” means infinite—similar to the meaning of “Mugen.” This connection is also reflected in the game’s Chinese title.

Reactions among the gaming community are mixed regarding the new name. Still, many are relieved the project remains active.

Players are already comparing Ananta to another upcoming RPG, Neverness to Everness from Hotta Studio. While Ananta’s latest trailer is visually polished, it doesn’t include any gameplay footage.

For many, Neverness to Everness retains an edge in anticipation. Personally, I find the visual style of Ananta more compelling.

Here’s Where Things Get Complicated

Interestingly, the team behind Project Mugen removed all of their original social media accounts, including a YouTube channel with more than 100,000 subscribers and millions of views.

They preserved their Discord server with a new name, but all other platforms were restarted from scratch. This has confused fans, who wonder why existing accounts weren’t simply renamed.

In Ananta, players take on the role of an Infinite Trigger—a supernatural investigator dealing with paranormal chaos. Among the game’s cast are characters like Taffy, Bansy, Alan, Mechanika, and Dila.
