Zach Braff Joins Cast for Scrubs Reboot

Author:Kristen Update:Jul 01,2025

Television has a knack for bringing back the past — and 2025 is shaping up to be a year of exciting revivals. From reboots rooted in familiar universes like The Office and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, one of the most beloved comedies from the early 2000s, Scrubs, is set to make its return.

It’s been 24 years since Zach Braff first stepped into the scrubs of J.D., the idealistic young doctor navigating the chaotic halls of Sacred Heart Hospital. Now, Braff is officially coming back to reprise his iconic role for ABC’s upcoming Scrubs reboot. The new series aims to blend fresh faces with familiar ones, continuing the legacy that made the original such a fan favorite.

If this sounds like déjà vu, there's good reason. ABC previously attempted a revival during what would become the show’s controversial ninth season, where the original cast transitioned the spotlight to a new generation of medical interns. Unfortunately, the move didn’t resonate with audiences and was canceled after just nine episodes.

Now, nearly two decades later, the network is giving it another shot. This time around, Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence is at the helm, crafting a project that combines both reboot and revival elements. With Zach Braff already on board, reports suggest more original cast members are likely to join the medical team.

According to Bill Lawrence, the idea only makes sense if it serves both the characters and the audience.

“We've been talking about a lot, and I think the only real reason to do it is a combo,” Lawrence told Deadline. “A: people wanting to see what the world of medicine was like for the people they love, which is part of any successful reboot. But B: I think that show always worked because you get to see young people dropped into the world of medicine, knowing young people that go there are super idealistic and are doing it because it's a calling.”

Originally airing from 2001 to 2010, Scrubs delivered 182 heartfelt and hilarious episodes over nine seasons. While no official filming dates have been announced yet, fans are eagerly awaiting news on when production will begin and who else might step back into their white coats.
