Ubisoft Restarts Project Maverick Development: Rumors

The extraction shooter set in the Far Cry universe, taking place in the harsh landscapes of Alaska, has undergone a complete reboot, as reported by Insider Gaming. Originally codenamed Project Maverick, it was initially planned as a multiplayer expansion for Far Cry 7. However, following an internal review, the project faced significant restructuring. Despite garnering positive feedback from employees and testers, Ubisoft's management opted to redirect the majority of resources towards Project Blackbird, the official title for Far Cry 7. The decision to reassign the technical team to other projects effectively sealed the fate of the multiplayer component.

Now, Ubisoft Sherbrooke, a studio renowned for its development support capabilities, has taken the reins of the project. The majority of the original development team has been reassigned to contribute to the next installment of the Far Cry series.

According to insider Tom Henderson, as of mid-December 2024, Far Cry 7 is set to plunge players into an atmosphere charged with tension and desperation, where time emerges as the primary adversary. The narrative will center on the protagonist's desperate mission to rescue their family, abducted by a sinister conspiracy cult. This cult is engaged in chilling experiments involving hallucinogens on animals and children. Players will be racing against a tight deadline of 72 in-game hours, which translates to 24 real-time hours, making time management a critical gameplay element that intensifies the urgency and pressure of the experience.

A unique feature of Far Cry 7 will be a timer displayed on the protagonist's wristwatch, serving as a constant reminder of the ticking clock. This mechanic will not only amplify the sense of urgency but also compel players to make swift and strategic decisions. Far Cry 7 is poised to offer a gripping experience where every second is precious, and every decision carries weighty consequences.
