The Future of GTA Online After GTA 6's Release: A Look at Take-Two's Strategy

The impending release of GTA 6 in Fall 2025 has left many GTA Online players wondering about the fate of their long-standing investment in the game. Will their progress, time, and money be rendered obsolete with the arrival of a potential GTA Online 2 or a significantly updated version?

GTA Online's enduring popularity and profitability have been key factors in Rockstar's decision to prioritize live service updates over story DLC for GTA 5. However, the prospect of a new GTA Online raises concerns about the future of the current iteration. Should players continue investing time and resources into the existing game, or wait for the inevitable successor?

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed this question in a recent interview. While he avoided specifics about any new GTA Online project (as it remains unannounced), he cited the example of NBA 2K Online and NBA 2K Online 2 in the Asian market. Both games coexisted successfully, with 2K Sports maintaining support for both versions simultaneously.

Zelnick stated, "Generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles. We've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them."

This suggests that a future GTA Online iteration might not necessarily replace the current one. Continued player engagement with the existing GTA Online could lead to Rockstar maintaining support for it alongside any new version.

However, much remains unknown about GTA 6. With only a trailer and a release window confirmed, Rockstar needs to provide more information soon, particularly given the announced September release of Borderlands 4. The company's approach to the transition between GTA Online and its successor will be closely watched by the dedicated player base.
