"Switch 2 GameCube Controller Compatible with Non-GameCube Games, Potential Issues: Nintendo"

Author:Kristen Update:May 06,2025

Nintendo has recently addressed compatibility issues regarding its newly released GameCube controller, cautioning users that they may encounter "issues" when using it with modern Nintendo Switch 2 games.

The GameCube controller made its debut during the 60-minute Nintendo Direct event earlier this month. At the time, the fine print indicated that the controller is "only compatible with Nintendo GameCube" games available in the Nintendo Switch Online retro library, and not with other Switch 2 titles.

Nintendo has since clarified this statement, emphasizing that the retro controller is primarily intended for use with GameCube games. While it might be possible to use the GameCube controller with other Nintendo Switch 2 games, Nintendo warns that users "may experience some issues" due to the controller lacking "all the buttons and features" found on more contemporary controllers.

PlayNintendo has reiterated that the GameCube controller is exclusively compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.

"The Nintendo GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games," Nintendo stated to Nintendo Life.

"Since it doesn’t have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some issues when playing other games. The Nintendo GameCube controller can only be used on Nintendo Switch 2 and is not compatible with Nintendo Switch."
