Stephen King Joins Mike Flanagan's Dark Tower: 'It's Happening' - IGN Fan Fest 2025

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 15,2025

Mike Flanagan's upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's epic fantasy saga, The Dark Tower, is set to be a faithful rendition of the novels. Flanagan, known for his successful adaptations of King's works such as Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game, has now enlisted the author himself to enhance the project. In an exclusive interview with IGN, Stephen King confirmed his involvement, stating, "All I can say is it's happening. I am writing stuff now and I think that's all I want to say because the next thing you know, I'll stir up a bunch of stuff I don't necessarily want to stir up yet. I'm in process right now, and to say too much feels like a jinx."

This collaboration is particularly exciting given the scope and significance of The Dark Tower series, which King began writing in 1970 with the first novel, The Gunslinger. The series is renowned for its intricate mythology that spans nearly all of King's fiction. King's previous involvement in adaptations, such as writing an epilogue for the Paramount+ series The Stand, suggests he could add substantial depth to Flanagan's project.

Flanagan's commitment to staying true to King's original work was emphasized in a 2022 interview with IGN, where he stated, "it would look like the books" and warned against trying to transform The Dark Tower into something akin to Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. He believes that the story's essence—a small group of individuals against overwhelming odds—will resonate powerfully with audiences, ensuring an emotional and immersive experience.

The promise of fidelity to the source material is especially reassuring after the 2017 film adaptation of The Dark Tower, which was criticized for its deviation from the novels. While details about Flanagan's adaptation remain under wraps, including its release date and format, fans can look forward to other King projects from Flanagan in the meantime. These include the upcoming theatrical release of The Life of Chuck in May and a Carrie series for Amazon based on King's 1974 novel.
