Spider-Man 2 Debuts to 'Mixed' Steam Reviews Amid Serious PC Performance Problems

Author:Kristen Update:Feb 19,2025

Spider-Man 2's PC port, initially touted for its impressive performance based on its system requirements, has received a mixed reception on Steam. Many users report significant technical problems, resulting in a less-than-stellar "mixed" user review rating.

Currently, only 55% of Steam reviews are positive. Numerous players with high-end hardware, including an RTX 4090 user, cite frequent crashes. One user stated the game is "completely unplayable," crashing every five minutes. Several reviewers recommend delaying purchase until performance-stabilizing patches are released, highlighting issues such as erratic frame rates in cutscenes, audio desynchronization, freezing, stuttering, and missing lighting. One user even requested a refund due to the game's instability.

The primary issue seems to be frequent crashes of the game's graphics controller, even on powerful PCs. A common error message points to outdated drivers, excessive in-game settings, GPU overheating, or game errors.

PlayBeyond crashes, other reported problems include malfunctioning DLSS and ray tracing, extended loading times, missing textures, and persistent audio glitches. Some players claim performance stutters worsen over extended play sessions, eventually leading to complete crashes, possibly due to memory leaks.

Nixxes, the port's developer, acknowledged the issues on the Steam forums, directing users to their support website for troubleshooting guides and requesting logs and crash dumps for faster diagnosis. They also addressed a bug affecting photo-op missions, suggesting a workaround involving lower graphics settings or resolution if frame rates drop below 20 FPS.
