Spectre Divide and studio behind it shut down

Author:Kristen Update:May 28,2025

Spectre Divide has been in the spotlight ever since it was revealed that the renowned streamer and former esports pro Shroud was involved in its development. However, a big name doesn't always guarantee a project's success. Today, Mountaintop Studios announced that it will be closing down, and the servers for the shooter game will soon follow suit.

The studio is set to dissolve by the end of this week, while the game's servers will remain operational for just under a month. During this period, Mountaintop Studios has promised to refund players for any purchases made within the game. Unfortunately, Spectre Divide struggled to capture a significant audience or generate sufficient revenue to sustain its operations.

It's easy to feel disappointed at the news of yet another project failing, but this situation underscores the immense challenges of entering the live-service gaming market. Let's face it—Spectre Divide didn't bring anything particularly innovative or revolutionary to the table, which is crucial for attracting players. Even with Shroud's fame and esports pedigree, the game couldn't bridge the gap between top-tier players and casual gamers, who have vastly different expectations and needs.

Ultimately, another esports-centric concept has not met the mark in the competitive world of game development. Press F to pay respects.
