Sony’s State of Play Summer 2025 Hits Record Viewership

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 08,2026

The record-breaking State of Play June 2025 showcase smashed Sony's previous viewership records, setting a new benchmark for concurrent audiences.

Sony launched the summer gaming announcement season with an impressive lineup of reveals ahead of Summer Games Fest Week. Highlights included first looks at 007 First Light, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, Romeo is a Dead Man, and the highly anticipated Silent Hill f.

Streams Charts reports this State of Play presentation reached a historic peak of over 2.2 million simultaneous viewers, marking the highest in the series' history. The data reveals it became 2025's third most-watched gaming or tech showcase, trailing only two Nintendo Direct events (with Nintendo's Switch 2 unveiling understandably leading by a significant margin).

As Push Square noted, while this State of Play set records, it wasn't Sony's all-time most-viewed stream. That distinction belongs to the landmark PS5 reveal event, which maintains 44 million views. The Horizon series presentations for Forbidden West and Forbidden Dawn also demonstrated impressive staying power with 15 and 10 million views respectively. However, Tuesday's showcase undoubtedly became the most successful State of Play ever.

This year's State of Play emphasized third-party developers, particularly Japanese studios, featuring major announcements from Capcom, Grasshopper Manufacture, Konami, ArtPlay, Square Enix, and Team Ninja. Notably, first-party exclusive titles were relatively scarce in the presentation.

The event's content strategy appeared tailored specifically for dedicated gamers, with a strong emphasis on action-oriented titles—many expected to carry mature/18+ ratings—rather than casual gaming experiences.
