Street Fighter Tournament "Sleep Fighter" Announced in Japan

A groundbreaking Street Fighter tournament, dubbed "Sleep Fighter," has been announced in Japan, bringing a unique twist to the world of competitive gaming. Organized by SS Pharmaceuticals, a pharmaceutical company, this Capcom-backed event aims to promote the importance of sleep and their sleep-aid drug, Drewell. The tournament, set to take place on August 31 at Ryogoku KFC Hall Tokyo, is not just about battling it out in Street Fighter 6 (SF6); it's also about ensuring players get enough rest.

Players Need to Start Racking Up Sleep Points a Week Before Tourney

In a first-of-its-kind rule for esports, the "Sleep Fighter" tournament requires participants to log their sleep hours a week before the event. Each team, consisting of three players, must ensure they sleep at least six hours per night, totaling a minimum of 126 hours over the week. Failure to meet this requirement will result in a penalty of five points deducted for every hour short of the target. This innovative approach underscores the event's focus on sleep wellness, aligning with SS Pharmaceuticals' campaign, "Let's Do the Challenge, Let's Sleep First," which seeks to promote healthy sleeping habits across Japan.

The tournament itself is structured as a team-based competition where teams face off in a "best-of-three" match format. Points are not only earned through victories but also through accumulated "Sleep Points." The team that logs the highest total sleep time gains the privilege of setting the match conditions, adding an extra layer of strategy to the competition.

The "Sleep Fighter" event is set to attract a diverse array of participants, including renowned players like two-time EVO champion "Itazan" Itabashi Zangief and top SF player Dogura, blending competitive gaming with a focus on health and wellness. Attendance at the venue will be limited to 100 people, selected via a lottery system. However, for those unable to attend in person, the tournament will be streamed live on YouTube and Twitch, with further broadcast details to be announced on the official tournament website and Twitter (X) account.
