Taking place five years after the events of the first season, The Last of Us Season 2 follows Joel and Ellie as they live with Joel's brother, Tommy, in their commune in Montana. The inaugural season of *The Last of Us* proved to be a major success for HBO. Developed by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann, the series won several Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards and received five Primetime Emmy nominations. These included categories such as Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor, Lead Actress, Outstanding Directing, and Outstanding Writing.

Building on the success of Season 1, HBO is highly enthusiastic about the series' future. HBO's Francesca Orsi has hinted that the show is planned to run for a total of four seasons. This means the upcoming second season will not cover the entirety of the second game's story.
