Reynolds Pitches R-Rated Star Wars to Disney

Author:Kristen Update:May 28,2025

Ryan Reynolds, known for his role as Deadpool, recently revealed on The Box Office Podcast that he pitched an R-rated Star Wars project to Disney. While it remains uncertain whether Disney has accepted the pitch or if it would be a movie or a TV show, Reynolds shared his vision for such a project. He explained, “I pitched to Disney, I said, ‘Why don’t we do an R-rated Star Wars property?’” He emphasized that an R-rating could serve as a "Trojan Horse for emotion," rather than being solely vulgar, and pondered why studios are hesitant to take such risks.

Reynolds has a successful track record with R-rated films, having been a key part of three of the top-five highest-grossing R-rated movies: Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine. The latter, starring both Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, remains the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, with earnings over $1.3 billion, according to Box Office Mojo. Despite his interest in an R-rated Star Wars project, Reynolds clarified that he wouldn't want to act in it, stating, “I’m not saying I would want to be in it; that would be a bad fit,” preferring instead to contribute behind the scenes as a producer or writer. He believes that such projects thrive on scarcity and surprise, elements that could be challenging to maintain with the constant stream of content on Disney+.
