Retro Fighting Game Killer Instinct Gold the Latest Addition to the Nintendo Switch Online Library

Author:Kristen Update:May 27,2025

Killer Instinct Gold has now joined the ranks of the Nintendo Switch Online library, bringing another classic Nintendo 64 game to subscribers of the Online Expansion Pack. This title is a port of the arcade hit Killer Instinct 2, and it complements the original Killer Instinct already available in the retro gaming collection.

Originally released in 1996, Killer Instinct Gold was crafted by the renowned British studio Rare, known for their collaborations with Nintendo. During that era, Rare was a key second-party developer, creating iconic games such as Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye 007, and Perfect Dark for Nintendo's early systems. In Killer Instinct Gold, players can choose from a roster of 10 distinct fighters and engage in various game modes, boasting an impressive array of "hundreds of thousands of moves and killer Combos at your fingertips."

Now under the ownership of Microsoft, the Killer Instinct franchise sees Killer Instinct Gold as another Xbox Game Studios title making its way to the Nintendo Switch. Since the launch of the Xbox One title Killer Instinct in 2013, there has been no clear sign from Microsoft about the future of the series, leaving fans without a new sequel to look forward to.

It offers online multiplayer capabilities, enabling players to connect and play with friends worldwide. The service also provides access to a rich catalog of classic Nintendo games from the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, and soon, with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, the new GameCube libraries. New users can take advantage of a free seven-day trial to explore what the service has to offer.

Preorders for the Nintendo Switch 2 began at the end of April, with the console priced at $449.99. The demand was predictably high, leading to Nintendo issuing a warning to U.S. customers who pre-ordered through the My Nintendo Store, stating that release date delivery might not be guaranteed. However, Doug Bowser, the head of Nintendo of America, reassured IGN that the company is confident in meeting consumer demand "through the holidays."
