Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 have maintained their remarkable sales performance, showcasing the enduring appeal of these open-world masterpieces. These titles not only highlight Rockstar's exceptional craftsmanship but also solidify their reputation as leaders in delivering immersive gaming experiences.

Grand Theft Auto 5, launched in 2013, immerses players in the bustling city of Los Santos as they navigate the lives of three aspiring criminals. Its initial success was monumental, and with subsequent re-releases and the addition of a thriving online multiplayer mode, GTA 5 has become one of the best-selling pieces of entertainment media ever. On the other hand, Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018, allows players to step into the boots of outlaw Arthur Morgan and explore the rugged landscapes of the Old West, earning both critical acclaim and commercial success.

Despite the passage of time—nearly 12 years for GTA 5 and almost seven for Red Dead Redemption 2—these games continue to dominate sales charts. According to PlayStation's December 2024 download chart, GTA 5 secured the third spot for the PS5 in both the US/Canada and Europe, and fifth for the PS4 in the same regions. Meanwhile, Red Dead Redemption 2 topped the PS4 sales in the United States and secured second place in the EU, only behind EA Sports FC 25.

GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 Are Still Topping PlayStation Sales Charts

The European 2024 GSD figures, as reported by VGC, further underscore the success of these titles. GTA 5 rose to the fourth highest-selling game of the year, up from fifth in 2023, while Red Dead Redemption 2 climbed to seventh place from eighth. Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company, recently announced that GTA 5 has surpassed 205 million sales, and Red Dead Redemption 2 has exceeded 67 million copies sold.

The sustained popularity of these older titles is a testament to Rockstar's ability to create games with lasting appeal. As fans eagerly await the future, the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6 later this year has generated immense anticipation. Additionally, there are whispers that Red Dead Redemption 2 might see a port to the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, further expanding its reach.
