PS5 Disc Drive Restocked: Act Fast

Good news for PlayStation 5 owners in the U.S.—the official PS5 disc drive is once again available for purchase at select retailers as of mid-January 2025. However, availability remains limited and it's unlikely to stay in stock for long, so if you're looking to upgrade your PS5 Digital Edition or PS5 Pro with physical disc support, now might be the time to act.

Since its launch in 2020, the PS5 has offered two variants: one with a disc drive and one without—the latter being the Digital Edition. Sony continued this trend with the release of the PS5 Pro in late 2024, which also does not include an optical drive option. As a result, players who want to use physical game discs must purchase the disc drive separately. This modular design has led to ongoing supply shortages across the United States, with many retailers frequently running out of stock.

As of January 15, 2025, Amazon U.S. and PlayStation Direct have both restocked the official PS5 disc drive at the standard MSRP of $79.99. While Walmart currently only lists a third-party reseller with just three units remaining, their markup price of $122 makes it a less appealing—and more expensive—option for most buyers.

Where to Buy the PS5 Disc Drive Now

To prevent bulk purchases and ensure fair access for all customers, PlayStation Direct continues to enforce a one-per-customer limit on PS5 disc drives. This policy mirrors Sony’s approach with other high-demand products like the PlayStation Portal and limited-edition anniversary consoles.

The prolonged shortage of disc drives in the U.S. (and more recently in the UK) appears to be linked to increased demand following the PS5 Pro launch. Since the PS5 Pro only ships without a disc drive, many users are opting to buy the external disc drive separately to maintain compatibility with physical games.

Despite this latest restock, the disc drive remains unavailable at major retailers such as GameStop, Best Buy, and Walmart (outside of the overpriced third-party listing). This indicates that the shortage is far from resolved, though it remains uncertain how long these supply issues will continue.
