PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But Not a Home Run

A hypothetical poll asking which pro sports game series 2K should tackle next would likely crown NFL 2K the undisputed champion. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of gameplay, it's a promising offering.

HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for years, starting with The Golf Club a decade ago. This experience is evident in 2K25's polish. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an extensive roster of real-world courses (though it includes the PGA Championship, US Open, and Open Championship), the gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, like occasional framerate hiccups on PC, are easily overshadowed by the overall fun factor.

PlayThe improved EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick control (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) felt intuitive. Difficulty settings allow for both forgiving and challenging gameplay, catering to various skill levels. The addition of lateral movement in the tee box adds a strategic element. The enhanced ball physics also contribute to a more realistic feel. Playing as Tiger Woods, this year's cover athlete, certainly enhanced the experience.

MyCareer mode receives a welcome boost with narrative elements, allowing players to choose between heroic and villainous paths, impacting stat boosts. Earned VC unlocks gear that further affects stats, alongside skill upgrades through gameplay. The addition of regularly refreshed Quests (e.g., achieving 10 consecutive birdies) adds replayability.

PlayThe MyPlayer creator, while not extensively explored, offered sufficient customization options. Skill trees provide further depth. Multiplayer features, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise engaging social interaction, echoing the fun of classic golf games. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players with differing time zones.

PGA Tour 2K25 excels in its consistent performance across all aspects without any major flaws. While this might not generate overwhelming excitement, it positions itself as a solid choice for golf enthusiasts and casual gamers seeking a relaxing yet engaging experience. A playable demo is currently available.
