Bethesda's Oblivion Remastered Sparks Debate Over Nintendo Switch 2 Pricing

Author:Kristen Update:Aug 10,2025

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has ignited discussions about Nintendo’s Switch 2 game pricing, with fans suggesting the Mario maker could take cues from Bethesda’s approach to value.

Developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, Oblivion Remastered boasts extensive visual and gameplay enhancements. It delivers 4K resolution at 60 FPS, alongside revamped leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and menus. New dialogue, an improved third-person perspective, and advanced lip sync technology further elevate the experience. Fans are impressed, with some arguing it feels more like a remake than a remaster. Bethesda, however, has clarified its choice to label it a remaster.

Priced at $50 with all original DLC included, Oblivion Remastered offers substantial value, casting a harsh light on Nintendo’s Switch 2 pricing strategy.

In contrast, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition retails for $70, while The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Nintendo Switch 2 commands $80. Existing Switch owners can upgrade for $10, and Nintendo Switch Online subscribers get the upgrade free. Yet, the $80 price tag for Tears of the Kingdom and other Switch 2 titles has fueled online criticism.

Worse still for Zelda fans, IGN confirmed that Breath of the Wild’s Switch 2 Edition excludes the Expansion Pass, requiring an extra $20 for DLC access if not already owned.

The Switch 2 Edition of Breath of the Wild includes enhanced visuals, better performance, achievements, and support for the new "Zelda Notes" service via the Nintendo Switch Online app. However, original Switch owners must upgrade to access these features.

For new buyers, Breath of the Wild’s Switch 2 Edition costs $70—$10 more than its original price. Without the DLC Expansion Pass, the full experience totals $90.

Spending $90 on a 2017 Wii U title’s updated version stings, especially when Mario Kart World also retails at an unprecedented $80 and the Nintendo Switch 2 itself costs $450.

Oblivion Remastered, with its remake-like quality and all DLC for $50, makes Nintendo’s pricing look steep by comparison.

“Nintendo will see that and think, ‘They could’ve charged $30 more,’” quipped redditor Cultural_Writing2999. “Hard to learn lessons when the cash keeps flowing,” added geldonyetich.

This sentiment reflects the view that Nintendo’s high Switch 2 prices stem from confidence in fans’ willingness to pay. Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, told IGN: “Nintendo sets these prices because they know fans will buy.”
