The Nintendo Switch 2: A Size Comparison

The recently released Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer reveals a larger console than its predecessor. This shift suggests a move away from compact handhelds and towards larger portable devices like the Steam Deck. While Nintendo hasn't released official dimensions, estimations can be made based on the trailer and a CES 2025 Genki mock-up, which closely resembles the final design.

Screen Size:

The Switch 2 is estimated to have an 8-inch screen (diagonal measurement), approximately 177mm wide and 99mm tall. This represents a nearly 30% increase in diagonal size and a 66% increase in area compared to the original Switch's 6.2-inch screen. Compared to the Switch Lite (5.5-inch) the increase is 45% diagonally and 111% in area. Even against the Switch OLED (7-inch), the Switch 2 is 14% larger diagonally and 30% larger in area. While larger than previous Switch models, the Steam Deck (7-inch and 7.4-inch OLED) still boasts a larger screen, though the Switch 2 surpasses even the Steam Deck OLED's size by 8% diagonally and 11% in area.

Overall Console Size:

Measurements from the Genki mock-up suggest the Switch 2 is approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall, a 25% increase over the original Switch (239mm x 102mm). It's 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm) and about 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm). The depth is expected to be similar to the original Switch.

Joy-Con Size:

The trailer indicates slightly taller, but similarly wide, Joy-Cons. Estimated dimensions are 32mm wide and 115mm tall, a 13% increase over the originals.

Screen Unit Size:

Subtracting the Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, the screen unit is estimated at 200mm long and 115mm tall, approximately 31% larger than the original Switch. This allows for relatively slim bezels.

Disclaimer: These measurements are estimations based on the Genki mock-up and trailer analysis. They may differ from Nintendo's official dimensions. However, the estimations suggest a significantly larger console compared to its predecessors.
