Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Have a New Gimmick

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 18,2025

Summary

  • Newly surfaced evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons may incorporate a computer mouse-like functionality.
  • Shipping manifests from a suspected Nintendo parts supplier list "mouse soles"—adhesive tape typically found on computer mice—intended for the Switch 2's controllers.
  • This wouldn't be unprecedented; Lenovo's Legion GO handheld already features a controller with a similar mouse mode.

Circumstantial evidence hints at a surprising feature for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2: Joy-Cons with potential mouse functionality. While the widespread adoption by game developers remains uncertain, this aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.

This intriguing possibility comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a presumed Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.

In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: customs manifests mentioning polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape, described as "mouse soles" and intended "to stick to game console handles." The "mouse soles" designation, typically referring to the bottom of a computer mouse, strongly suggests a mouse-like control scheme for the Switch 2.

LiC identified two "mouse sole" model numbers: LG7 and SML7. These numbers haven't been found in public databases, implying they are new, unreleased products. The data indicates both tape pieces are 90 x 90mm, potentially large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, though likely requiring trimming during assembly. The legitimacy of this information, however, remains unconfirmed.

Nintendo Switch 2: Not the First with Mouse Controller Mode

While a mouse-like control mode fits Nintendo's experimental approach, it's not entirely new. Lenovo's Legion GO handheld already offers this functionality with its right controller, transformable into a sideways joystick for mouse-like operation. Lenovo even includes a plastic piece to aid smooth surface movement in this mode.

Further mirroring potential Switch 2 features, the Legion GO also uses magnetic rails for easy controller attachment—another rumored feature for the Switch 2. The Legion GO thus offers a possible glimpse into the design direction of Nintendo's next hybrid console.
