Nintendo Console Rankings Unveiled

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 18,2025

With the exciting reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2, fans are buzzing with anticipation for Nintendo's latest console. Boasting over four decades of rich history in video game hardware, Nintendo continues to captivate gamers worldwide. While initial impressions suggest a cautious approach with the Switch 2, we're eager to see what innovative features and games it will bring to the table. For those eager to dive into the details of the Switch 2 trailer, we've got you covered. However, let's take a nostalgic journey through Nintendo's storied past first.

Over the past five decades, Nintendo has launched eight home consoles (NES, Super NES, Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, and the Switch) and five handhelds (Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, DS, and 3DS). But which of these iconic systems reigns supreme? I've taken a stab at ranking them using an IGN Tier List, considering both the groundbreaking hardware and the enduring legacy of their game libraries. Check out my personal tier list below:

The NES holds a special place in my heart as the first console I ever played. Memories of tackling Super Mario Bros., Mega Man 2, and the challenging Hook platformer as a five-year-old keep it firmly in the S tier. Meanwhile, the Switch's innovative hybrid design—despite issues like stick drift—coupled with stellar titles like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Odyssey, earns it a spot alongside the NES at the top.

If you disagree with my rankings or believe the Virtual Boy outshines the N64, why not create your own tier list? You can rank Nintendo's consoles in S, A, B, C, and D tiers and compare your choices with the IGN community.
