Nexus Mods enforces age checks for EU, UK adult content

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 17,2026

European and UK modders using Nexus Mods will soon need to undergo age verification.

Last month, Nexus Mods founder Robin "Dark0ne" Scott announced his decision to step back from daily operations, explaining this move served both his and the community's best interests.

These upcoming changes aren't driven by new ownership but rather stem from legal requirements under the UK's Online Safety Act and EU's Digital Services Act.

"As a UK-based company, we must comply with new regulations requiring the removal of illegal content and implementing safeguards restricting children's access to adult material," the company stated.

"This presents two options: either eliminate adult content for European users entirely or implement policy updates including age verification measures. The modding community relies heavily on adult content - removing it isn't feasible. While some users may find these changes inconvenient, they're necessary to legally maintain our platform's current offerings."

Finalized Adult Content Guidelines will provide more details, but Nexus is currently revising its terms of service to explicitly define illegal content under UK law and outline child protection measures.

"We're strengthening our policy language for absolute clarity, though this content was never permitted. All users will receive notifications about these TOS updates," Nexus clarified.

The platform will implement automated systems to detect and immediately remove illegal or abusive content. Offending users face permanent bans and potential reports to the National Crime Agency.

Additional improvements include redesigned adult content tagging, enhanced blocking/muting features, and upgraded spam detection. Age verification will eventually apply to most adult content for European users, while non-European users remain exempt.

"Our current age verification method (simple checkbox confirmation) will stay unchanged unless future legislation mandates updates in specific regions," the team noted.

In other modding news, Stellar Blade director Kim Hyung Tae reportedly wholeheartedly supports mods - a relevant stance given the nearly 600 Nexus Mods listings spanning cosmetic enhancements, graphical overhauls, VR adaptations, and yes, even nail polish modifications. Many more exist in the platform's adult-only category, but we'll leave that discussion for another time.
