Rompopolo, a Brute Wyvern-type monster, makes its first appearance in *Monster Hunter Wilds* during Chapter 2, in Mission 2-1: Toward Fervent Fields. You'll encounter Rompopolo in the Oilwell Basin region while on your way to Azuz City. Defeating it is crucial to progress further in the game.

Once you've defeated Rompopolo at least once, its entry will be added to your Large Monster Field Guide. You can then engage with it repeatedly by either exploring the Oilwell Basin or by selecting the "Oilwell Basin Blast" Optional Quest from your Tent.

To prepare effectively for this battle, arm your hunter with water-element weapons, which you can obtain from Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest. Additionally, equip gear that offers fire resistance, which you can also farm from Uth Duna or Ajarakan later in the chapter. Consider crafting a fire-resistance Talisman like Fire Charm I or a general defense charm like Defense Charm I. Don't forget to boost your health and stamina by grilling a meal before the fight.

Rompopolo Attacks and Weaknesses

Rompopolo is a unique wyvern with a bipedal body and saggy skin that it inflates with gas. This gas serves as ammunition for various explosive attacks. Be aware that Rompopolo can also inflict poison, so carry Antidotes and rely on your Palico to help cleanse ailments.

Key attacks to watch out for include:

  • Arm Swipe – Rompopolo will swipe forward twice with its clawed arms. This attack is easy to dodge due to its limited range.
  • Lunge With Arm Swipe – Rompopolo charges forward while performing an arcing swipe with both arms.
  • Tail Swing – Rompopolo swings its tail towards its target.
  • Poison Stream or Swipe – Rompopolo sprays a stream of poison gas or charges forward while swinging its head and spraying poison.
  • Oil Explosion – From a distance, Rompopolo uses its tail stinger to inject gas into oil pools, causing explosions. Dodge to avoid damage.
  • Charged Oil Explosion – Later in the fight, Rompopolo pumps more gas into the oil for a larger explosion. Dodge this to minimize damage.

Should You Kill or Capture Rompopolo?

As with previous *Monster Hunter* games, you have the option to either kill or capture Rompopolo at the end of the battle. To capture it, you must weaken it until your Palico notes that it looks "tired." Then, use Shock Traps or Pitfall Traps to ensnare it, followed by at least one Tranq Bomb to knock it out, completing the capture.

Both killing and capturing Rompopolo yield viable rewards, though the item drops may vary slightly. Some items are exclusive to captures, while others are obtained through kills. Below are the potential low-rank and high-rank drops from Rompopolo:
