Marvel Unveils New Star Wars Series on New Republic Era

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 21,2025

Marvel Comics is set to relaunch its flagship Star Wars series in May 2025, picking up the narrative thread after the Battle of Jakku and the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War. The new series will follow the iconic trio of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia Organa as they strive to establish the New Republic and bring stability to a galaxy in turmoil.

The latest installment of the Star Wars saga is penned by Alex Segura, who previously worked on the Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku miniseries. The art for the series will be provided by Star Wars veteran Phil Noto, known for his work on Star Wars: Poe Dameron. Both Noto and Leinil Yu will contribute cover art for the first issue.

Set approximately two years after the events of Return of the Jedi, Segura and Noto's Star Wars series unfolds in the aftermath of the last significant battle between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance at Jakku. As the New Republic emerges as the new governing power, it faces the challenge of consolidating its authority amidst a power vacuum exploited by pirates, thieves, and other nefarious elements.

In an interview with StarWars.com, Segura expressed excitement about exploring a fresh, uncharted era following the Galactic Civil War. "Now that we've put the period at the end of the Galactic Civil War with the Battle of Jakku, we can speed ahead into a new, uncharted era, with some new galactic threats, foes, and mysteries for our beloved heroes to grapple with, blending the familiar with the new and shocking," he stated. Segura emphasized that the series will be action-packed and filled with the character moments fans love, designed to be accessible to new and returning readers alike.

Noto shared his enthusiasm for the project, saying, "Alex is an amazing writer and has come up with some great storylines and new characters for this series and I’m thrilled for the opportunity to bring them to life on the page! It’s also been exciting to draw the classic characters in the post-Return of the Jedi era because there’s no existing film or TV versions of them. I get to create new looks for them while also having reference of the actors from the 80s to help sell the look of this timeline."

Star Wars #1 is slated for release on May 7, 2025, perfectly timed to coincide with this year's Star Wars Day celebrations.

This new series won't be the only Marvel comic set in the post-Return of the Jedi era. In February, Marvel will launch Star Wars: Legacy of Vader, which delves into Kylo Ren's journey following the events of The Last Jedi.
