Some Marvel Rivals Players Are Risking Bans

Summary

  • NetEase Games has warned that modding Marvel Rivals could lead to account bans due to violations of the game's terms of service.
  • Despite a hidden anti-modding measure introduced in Season 1, workarounds have been developed by the modding community.
  • It remains unclear whether NetEase Games has issued any bans specifically for modding Marvel Rivals.

NetEase Games, the developer and publisher behind the popular team shooter Marvel Rivals, has issued a stern warning to its player base: continue modding the game at your own peril. The company has made it clear that any form of modification, be it cosmetic hero mods or performance-enhancing add-ons, contravenes the game's terms of service, potentially resulting in a permanent ban.

This announcement followed the launch of Marvel Rivals Season 1, which not only introduced balance adjustments to various heroes but also welcomed two new playable characters from the Fantastic Four: Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic. Fans can look forward to the addition of Human Torch and The Thing in upcoming updates. Since its debut in December 2024, Marvel Rivals has captivated fans of both Marvel Comics and team shooters, earning a nomination for Online Game of the Year at the DICE Awards 2025, set to be broadcast live from Las Vegas on February 13.

Despite NetEase Games' efforts to curb modding with a new deterrent in Season 1, the community has found ways around these restrictions. A notable example is an add-on hosted on Nexus Mods by a user named Prafit, designed to bypass the asset hash check implemented by NetEase Games. Prafit has cautioned users that using their mod comes with the risk of account bans and recommends it only for those with high-end PCs. Following this, another mod surfaced on social media, transforming Mister Fantastic into Luffy from One Piece, crafted by a user called Ercuallo and highlighted by RivalsLeaks on Twitter.

Marvel Rivals Warns Users to Stop Modding or Risk Bans

While it's not confirmed if any players have been banned specifically for modding, NetEase Games has emphasized that such actions violate the game's terms of service. Although some mods, like one featuring US President-elect Donald Trump, have been removed from Nexus Mods, Prafit's Season 1 workaround remains available, having garnered over 500 downloads at the time of this report.

The game has also faced issues with false bans since its launch, adding complexity to the modding debate. As the situation unfolds, it will be interesting to see how NetEase Games responds to the ongoing challenge of modding within Marvel Rivals.
