"Marvel Rivals Modding Persists Despite Season 1 Bans"

Author:Kristen Update:May 25,2025

Despite the risks, players of *Marvel Rivals* are continuing to use mods, even after a crackdown initiated with the launch of Season 1. Since the game's successful debut in December, the community has been customizing skins, creating characters like Iron Man into Vegeta from *Dragon Ball* and Mantis into a goth. One particularly popular mod transforms Jeff the Land Shark into Pochita from *Chainsaw Man*.

Last week, coinciding with the introduction of the Fantastic Four and the start of Season 1, *Marvel Rivals* implemented a new measure to curb mod usage—an asset hash checking system. Developer NetEase had previously warned players against using mods, reinforcing this stance in a statement to IGN: "It is not recommended to modify any game files, as doing so carries the risk of getting banned." Yet, some players remain undaunted.

A workaround has been developed and shared widely online, requiring a few more steps but still accessible for most PC users. Modder Prafit, who shared their workaround on Nexus Mods, cautioned users, stating, "Use at your own risk." Prafit noted that the workaround bypasses the system introduced in the Season 1 patch, adding, "No-one knows if NetEase will ban you, but they have never issued permabans as far as we know."

New mods have emerged, capitalizing on the addition of Fantastic Four characters. For instance, Ercuallo's mod transforms Mister Fantastic into Luffy from *One Piece*, which has seen over 5,000 downloads in just two days since its release.

The community is now watching closely to see if NetEase will follow through on its threats to ban players using mods. While no bans have been reported yet, the use of workarounds might prompt further action. NetEase's interest in banning mods stems from potential revenue loss due to skin sales, intellectual property concerns, and the possibility that mods could disrupt game balance and performance. Modder Prafit suggested that only those with high-performance PCs should attempt the workaround.
