Live-Action Street Fighter Movie Finds a New Director

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 31,2025

The much-anticipated new Street Fighter movie has found its director in Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the quirky comedy series, The Eric Andre Show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai will helm this upcoming adaptation for Legendary Entertainment, which has already set a release date for March 20, 2026.

Capcom, the creator of the iconic fighting game franchise, is reportedly "deeply involved" in this project. This collaboration promises to bring an authentic Street Fighter experience to the big screen. Fans of the series will remember the 1994 film, which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison. Although it received mixed reviews at the time, it has since become a cult classic.

While casting details have yet to be announced, it's expected that many beloved Street Fighter characters will make an appearance in the film. Initially, the project was set to be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, the duo behind Talk to Me. However, they left the project last summer, paving the way for Sakurai. His involvement suggests that Legendary might be steering the film towards a more surreal and comedic tone, which could be a refreshing take on the franchise.

For fans eager to dive back into the world of Street Fighter, the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, is currently available. It recently introduced Mai Shiranui as a new fighter. You can read our comprehensive review of Street Fighter 6 to get all the details on this exciting game.
