Initially, Blue Whale Studios aimed for a sickly aesthetic, featuring an engorged head and pale green skin. They unveiled this design on Instagram, alongside a video showcasing the application of prosthetics on Nelson, offering fans a fascinating glimpse into the character's creation process. Despite its straightforward appearance lacking some of the intricate mutation details seen in the final film, the design resonated closely with The Leader's first appearance in the Marvel comics, specifically in 1964's *Tales to Astonish #62*.

Blue Whale Studios shared their pride in the work despite it not being used in the final cut of *Captain America: Brave New World*. "We were originally brought on to design and apply the practical makeup for The Leader on the incomparable Tim Blake Nelson in Captain America: Brave New World," the studio stated. "As often happens in film, the story evolved, and during reshoots, the creative direction shifted. Our version was ultimately not used in the final cut. Still, we remain incredibly proud of the work we created."

The studio drew inspiration directly from the comic books, aiming for a design that was both grounded and iconic, achieving a balance between source material fidelity and natural realism. They emphasized the technical achievement of crafting a lightweight and comfortable makeup for Nelson, crediting the dedication of their extraordinary team.

Interestingly, The Leader's final appearance in *Brave New World* aligns more closely with his portrayal in the 2018 *Immortal Hulk* series, showing how the character's design has evolved over time. The Leader's journey to villainy was hinted at as early as 2008's *The Incredible Hulk*, where Sam Sterns' exposure to Bruce Banner's Gamma-radiated blood set the stage for his transformation.
