Keanu Reeves Pitches Constantine 2 to DC Studios, Script Now in Development

Keanu Reeves has provided the most promising update yet on the long-awaited sequel to the 2005 cult classic, Constantine. Reeves, who portrayed the iconic occult detective and exorcist John Constantine in the original film, has confirmed that Constantine 2 is now ready to move forward with a script. This news comes after more than a decade of efforts to bring the sequel to life, driven by fans' demand and Reeves' own enthusiasm for the project.

In a recent interview with Inverse, Reeves shared that a story pitch was successfully presented to DC Studios. "We've been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, 'Okay,'" Reeves stated. "So, we're going to try and write a script." This development marks a significant step forward for the project, which has been eagerly anticipated by fans since the original film's release.

While this update is exciting, it's important to note that there's no guarantee Constantine 2 will receive the final green light from DC Studios co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran. The sequel is not yet a confirmed project within the rebooted DCU, and neither Gunn nor Safran have publicly mentioned it as a potential addition to their slate. Thus, the project remains on the edge of realization.

Reeves did, however, tease that should Constantine 2 be made, it would be set in "the same world" as the original film. He humorously added, "We're not going off that. John Constantine's going to be tortured even more." This commitment to continuity and Reeves' playful promise of further torment for the character hint at the direction the sequel might take.

Adding to the anticipation, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura revealed in a September interview with ComicBook that a script for Constantine 2 is already in his inbox. However, di Bonaventura confessed he's been too scared to read it, fearing it might not meet his high expectations. "You know it's in my inbox right now, funny enough," he said. "I'm too scared to read it, though, I want it to be good so bad. I’ll probably read it in the next few days, when I get on an airplane."
