Ed Boon, the mastermind behind the Mortal Kombat franchise, shared his insights on Johnny Cage's role in the sequel with Entertainment Weekly. "His integration into the Mortal Kombat story and universe is a big part of what this movie explores," Boon remarked. He highlighted the unique twist Urban brings to the character, describing him as a washed-up Hollywood star thrust into a fantastical, ultra-violent world. Boon teased a "ridiculously hilarious" introduction for Cage, while director Simon McQuoid emphasized the need for depth in the character, stating, "We wanted a character that wasn't just completely silly, comic book… It's a character that could instantly go there and become too light and throwaway if we were to lean too much into the kind of cheese. The casting of Karl Urban for that role allowed that character to have more depth."

Entertainment Weekly also confirmed that fans of the video game can look forward to movie-accurate skins for Urban's Johnny Cage, Rudolph's Kitana, and Ford's Shao Kahn in "Mortal Kombat 1" later this year, bridging the gap between the cinematic and gaming worlds.

In a surprising twist, Damon Herriman joins the cast as Quan Chi, while Josh Lawson and Max Huang reprise their roles as Kano and Kung Lao, despite their characters' demise in the first film. Boon explained this revival by citing the flexible lore of the Mortal Kombat universe, which allows for the return of dead characters through the realms of spirits and the NetherRealm.

Adding to the stellar lineup, Tati Gabrielle takes on the role of Jade, and Ana Thu Nguyen plays Queen Sindel, rounding out a robust ensemble for "Mortal Kombat 2," set to hit theaters on October 24, 2025.
