James Gunn Reveals DC

The DC Universe is undergoing a transformative renaissance. After years of financial disappointments, inconsistent vision, and Zack Snyder's departure, leadership changes have sparked creative revitalization.

James Gunn has consistently demonstrated his ability to elevate obscure comic book characters into mainstream success. With Creature Commandos proving popular enough to warrant a sequel, what's next from this visionary creator?

Superman Legacy

Scheduled for global release on July 11, 2025, this inaugural DCU project features James Gunn's fresh take on a young Superman navigating a world already populated by superheroes.

David Corenswet leads as the Man of Steel, with Rachel Brosnahan as intrepid journalist Lois Lane. The impressive supporting cast includes Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern and Milly Alcock likely appearing as Supergirl, creating what essentially amounts to a miniature Justice League on screen.

Arriving June 26, 2026, this adaptation promises one of DCU's most mature narratives. Gunn revealed this interpretation features a hardened Supergirl who survived fourteen years witnessing planetary destruction before reaching Earth.

Milly Alcock's casting as Kara after her breakout in House of the Dragon has drawn praise from original comic creator Tom King. Recent additions like Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem suggest the film will embrace the source material's darker conflicts while maintaining emotional depth.

Clayface

Clayface character design

Following The Penguin's success, DC Studios is developing a Clayface movie with Doctor Sleep's Mike Flanagan penning the script for this classic Batman villain's origin story.

First appearing in 1940 as a disgraced actor turned criminal, the shapeshifting antagonist has been portrayed by Ron Perlman, Brian McManamon and Alan Tudyk across various media adaptations. Production begins early next year.

Batman 2

Matt Reeves continues refining the sequel's script, now targeting an October 1, 2027 release - giving the project ample development time for this darker Batman vision five years after the first film.

The Brave and the Bold

Batman and Robin concept

Gunn and Safran's take introduces Damian Wayne as Batman's previously unknown assassin-trained son, inspired by Grant Morrison's comics. Director Andy Muschietti confirms they're avoiding overlap with Reeves' Batman films.

Swamp Thing

James Mangold envisions this as a self-contained gothic horror story rather than franchise fodder, focusing on the character's humanity and monstrous duality when he joins the DCU lineup.

The Authority

Audiences will first meet these morally complex heroes through The Engineer's appearance in 2025's Superman. The team originally emerged from Wildstorm Comics as Warren Ellis' deconstruction of superhero tropes.

Sgt. Rock

Sgt. Rock character

Following his Creature Commandos cameo, this WWII hero may get a feature film with Daniel Craig potentially starring under Luca Guadagnino's direction - a promising creative team for this storied military character.
