Xbox's Phil Spencer Explains the PlayStation 5 Port of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

At Gamescom 2024, Bethesda surprised attendees by announcing that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, initially slated as an Xbox and PC exclusive, will also launch on PlayStation 5 in Spring 2025. Spencer clarified that Xbox operates as a business, subject to performance expectations within Microsoft. This experience, he stated, informed their decision to expand multiplatform releases.

Despite the move, Spencer confirmed the strength of the Xbox platform, citing record-high player numbers and thriving franchises. He underscored the importance of adaptability in a rapidly changing gaming landscape, emphasizing the need for evolution in game development and distribution. Ultimately, Spencer stated that Xbox prioritizes creating high-quality games accessible to a wider audience.

The decision to bring Indiana Jones and the Great Circle to PlayStation 5 has been rumored for some time. This announcement follows earlier speculation about other first-party Xbox titles becoming multiplatform, and it marks the first official confirmation for a major title of this scale. This contrasts with Spencer's previous statements that major titles like Indiana Jones and Starfield would remain Xbox exclusives.

The shift in strategy can be traced back to Microsoft's 2020 acquisition of ZeniMax Media, Bethesda's parent company. Testimony during last year's FTC trial revealed an initial agreement between Disney and ZeniMax for a multiplatform release of the Indiana Jones game. This agreement was later renegotiated to make it an Xbox and PC exclusive. However, internal emails from 2021 show Xbox executives, including Spencer, discussing the potential drawbacks of exclusivity, acknowledging that while it might offer some benefits, it could also limit the overall impact of Bethesda's games.
