Gunn Confirms: Superman's Flight, Zero CGI

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 12,2025

DC Studios co-chief James Gunn addressed online criticism regarding Superman's expression in a recent TV spot. The spot featured new footage, including Lex Luthor near the Fortress of Solitude and Superman performing a barrel roll during flight. The internet buzzed over Superman's seemingly still face while his hair and cape flowed dramatically. Some attributed this to subpar CGI.

However, Gunn clarified on Threads that the shot contained no CGI on Superman's face. He explained the effect was due to the close-up wide-angle lens used and emphasized that both the Svalbard location (the Norwegian archipelago where filming took place) and David Corenswet's performance were entirely real. The “unnatural” expression, therefore, is simply the result of the camera angle and Corenswet's acting.

Despite Gunn's explanation, debate continues, with some comparing the shot to a similar scene featuring Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Regardless of the controversy, anticipation remains high for the Superman film, which premieres July 11, 2025, as the inaugural film in the DCU's "Gods and Monsters" chapter.
