First Glimpse: Nintendo Switch 2 Cartridge Revealed

Author:Kristen Update:May 25,2025

Nintendo has given us our first comprehensive glimpse at a game cartridge for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, set to launch next month. The latest video from the Nintendo Today app showcases the official Switch 2 carry case, which features slots designed to safely store up to six cartridges from both the original Nintendo Switch and the Switch 2.

As previously confirmed, the Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same dimensions and shape as those of the original Switch, allowing the new console to play games from both generations using a single cartridge slot. However, a notable distinction is the color of the cartridges. Switch 2 cartridges are distinctly red, a design choice that seems consistent across all titles, not just the Mario Kart World cartridge featured in the video. This red color can be seen in the video shared by OatmealDome on X / Twitter. Additionally, the top of the cartridge's design sticker now displays the Switch 2 logo, differentiating it from the original Switch cartridges.

Beyond the color change, Switch 2 cartridges remain identical to their predecessors, including the infamous foul-tasting coating applied by Nintendo to deter users from putting them in their mouths. Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta emphasized the safety aspect, stating to GameSpot, "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption. We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."
