The excitement among Nintendo fans is palpable following new Nintendo filings hinting at the potential release of a new GameCube controller. The buzz is centered around the possibility of playing GameCube classics via the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service on the upcoming Switch 2. As reported by Nintendo Life, an FCC filing by Nintendo for a "game controller" aligns with the Switch 2, and speculation suggests it could be a wireless Bluetooth controller reminiscent of the iconic GameCube design.
Further investigation by internet sleuths at Famiboards has led to a compelling theory. An image from the filing shows a label location that strikingly matches the back of a GameCube controller, specifically behind the C-Stick. While some speculate this could be a new version of the Switch Pro Controller, the current consensus leans towards its use with the Nintendo Switch Online service, which already offers wireless classic controllers for retro gaming.
This development has sparked conversations about the potential addition of a GameCube library to Nintendo Switch Online. Fans have long desired to see GameCube classics on the Switch, but until now, Nintendo has focused on re-releasing games from the NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy eras through its subscription service. The introduction of GameCube titles could mark a significant expansion of the service, especially with the anticipated launch of the Switch 2.
The Switch 2 was unveiled earlier in January with a brief trailer that confirmed features such as backwards compatibility and an additional USB-C port. While many details remain under wraps, including the purpose of a mysterious new button on the Joy-Con, speculation about its functionality has fueled fan theories, including the possibility of it serving as a mouse-like input.
Last month, a Nintendo patent hinted that the Switch 2’s Joy-Con controllers could be attached upside down, utilizing magnets instead of the rails found on the original Switch. This design change could allow players to customize the positioning of buttons and ports, potentially leading to innovative gameplay mechanics if implemented in the final product.
Analysts predict the Switch 2 could be priced between $400 and $500, with a possible release in June. While much remains unknown, Nintendo has scheduled a Direct for April 2, where more details about the console are expected to be revealed.
As we await further information, fans can enjoy a taste of GameCube nostalgia with Metroid Prime Remastered, currently available on the Nintendo Switch.
