Game Informer Revived by Director Neill Blomkamp's Studio

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 22,2026

Just over six months after GameStop discontinued it in August 2024, Game Informer has officially relaunched with its entire team returning.

In a 'Letter From the Editor,' Editor-in-Chief Matt Miller announced that Gunzilla Games acquired the rights to Game Informer from GameStop and plans to restore not just the editorial staff but also production and other operations.

For context, Gunzilla Games is the developer and publisher of the free-to-play extraction battle royale Off the Grid, currently in Early Access. It also created GunZ, the Layer-1 blockchain ecosystem that supports community-driven economies in major games, including Off the Grid. Notably, Neill Blomkamp, director of District 9 and Chappie, serves as Gunzilla's chief creative officer and co-founder.

Miller also emphasized that the new owners insisted on Game Informer maintaining its editorial independence. They agreed with the team that the publication's future depends on making all content and coverage decisions autonomously, free from external influence.

As a result, Game Informer now operates under a new entity called Game Informer Inc., and its 30-year legacy has been restored after last August's shutdown. The team has prepared extensively for the relaunch, with numerous new reviews of games released during the hiatus and their Best of 2024 awards ready to publish.

Additionally, Game Informer's print magazine will return at a later date, with plans to make it bigger and better than before. In the coming weeks, the platform will introduce membership and subscription benefits, expanded video and feature coverage, and a broader network of expert contributors and partnerships.
